The dates for Ash Wednesday and Easter are easy to remember – Ash Wednesday is Valentine’s Day, February 14th, and Easter is April 1st.
A pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins, is an old English tradition. Many people still abstain from eating meat during Lent, but in the past, Christians were expected to abstain from not only meat but also dairy. A pancake supper was one way to enjoy these forbidden foods before the Lenten fast began. Our pancake supper will be on Shrove Tuesday, February 13th, from 5:30pm-7pm in the Parish Hall. This event is free (though donations are always appreciated!), and everyone is invited to join us.
On Ash Wednesday, we’ll have services in the church at noon and 7pm. Both services will include hymns, a sermon, the imposition of ashes, and Communion; the choir will be singing at the 7pm service. The ashes are made by burning last year’s palms from Palm Sunday, and they remind us that we are dust, and to dust we shall return. We mark our foreheads with ashes as an acknowledgement of our mortality and our sins, and as a sign of our repentance and faith in the goodness and mercy of God.
